Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport shooting Rampage

Florida Airport Shooting: It was a horrifying day for the passengers in the Fort Lauderdale International Airport as a gunman opened fire at the baggage section, killing five people and injuring eight at least. The Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood airport was the major tourist attraction in Florida and the suspect bearing a military Id was brought under custody and interrogated by FBI over the shooting.

The gunman, who was identified as Esteban Santiago opened fire at the baggage section of Terminal 2, as travelers were collecting their luggage. Suddenly, they heard continuous gun shots and people flew to other terminals shouting for help. The video footage showed people running for safety. People even run to the airfield for safety, which is one of the busiest airports in the US. This incident shut down all airlines while paramedics, FBI and local law enforcement officers rushed to the spot.

The suspect is an Iraq veteran and was detained without police firing any shots at him. He seemed to have suffering from mental disorder where he was taken to a mental hospital by FBI. There have been several allegations over the suspect. Santiago was a former member of the Puerto Rico and Alaska National Guard, who served in Iraq from April 2010 to Feb 2011, ended his service in Aug.

“The terminals are very full right now, our passengers are sheltered in place, we’ll be working with law enforcement to actually get them released systemically,” Mark Gale, the director of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport said.

The Gunman had traveled from Alaska to Fort Lauderdale, with a stopover in Minnesota. Witness John Schlicher told Fox News that as he picked up his first bag, “I heard the first shot. As I did, the person right next to me fell to the ground… It was very surreal.”
