Microsoft announces Xbox One S

Microsoft just announced the newer version of Xbox One, the Xbox One S today at E3 in Los Angeles, putting an end to the month of leaks, a leaked picture finding its way into the wild yesterday morning.

The new Xbox One S is very smaller, slimmer and gets a new paint scheme, which the Microsoft calls it robot white. It is almost 40 percent smaller than its predecessor, ditching the bulky power supply kit and also can be placed vertically with an optional vertical stand.

Apart from cosmetic changes, the new Xbox One S also comes with a bunch of improvements and features compared to its predecessor. The biggest item is that it supports 4K Ultra, including 4K Ultra HD Bluray and HDR for gaming and video.

It will allow you to watch content in 4K on your TV with fancy sets like Netflix, Amazon Video content, and so on. It also supports HDR sets, and Gear of War will be first among them.

It comes with a more spacious 2TB hard drive. Other improvements include, one of the console’s USB ports has been moved to the front for easy access along with the controller pairing button and dropped the Kinect port.

You’ll have to use a separate USB adaptor if you want to hook up any accessories with the new device. There’s a new built-in IR blaster as well.

“The Xbox One S for us was a realization that first, we want to make a smaller Xbox, but there was also some capability that we saw growing out in the market around HDR and 4K video,” Xbox head Phil Spencer says of the new device. “So we said, if we’re going to do an upgrade to our console, let’s go ahead and embrace some of the technologies that are coming and make those part of our core SKU.”

The controller has also been upgraded along with the console that gets the same color as the console. It has textured grips on the back, Bluetooth, and improved range. A special, limited edition launch edition of the Xbox One S will be available in early August with a 2TB hard drive for $399. Two standard versions will be available soon after – a 500GB edition for $299, and 1TB for $349.
