The film opens with Mohanlal living in a small village inside the forest which is vulnerable to wild animals, especially man-eating tigers that end up with conflict with leopard often by villagers. Mohanal loses his mother when he was a kid, and his father also dies in a tiger attack after a while, and he is left with his brother and uncle Balaraman. Murugan in vengeance traps the predator with the help of Balaraman and kills it.
He turns into a rogue tiger hunter, and protects his village from tigers. At the same time, he becomes a lorry driver by profession and gets married to Myna (Kamalini Mukherjee). His main weapons are a vel (a kind of spear) and a rope dart. He has his own methods developed from his young age itself, that aids him in killing the tigers that attack humans. He is fond of his brother and is willing to do anything to protect him, and to keep the promise to his late father for the same. Murugan encounter legal threats due to his excessive hunting.
Mohanlal gets into trouble after killing a tiger that attacked Manikuttan’s friends and Balaraman when they returned home after collecting ganja from forest for medicinal purposes. One of Manikuttan’s friends, had a close encounter with the tiger, where Murugan appears from nowhere and kills it.
The rest of the story is how Jagapati Babu and Kishore (new forest ranger) are linked with Mohanlal and what happens to him and his wife after killing the tiger.
The highlight of the movie is a 10-minute stunt sequence between Mohanlal and the tiger. It’s very real and was filmed in Vietnam as the regulations in our country doesn’t permit stunt sequences with wild animals.
On a whole, Manyam Puli is a well sequenced action thriller that keeps us engaged in stunts and action sequences. The film tells how villagers near the forest straggle for their living and how they are threatened by forest guards and wild animals. It’s worth watching.
