The Korean auto manufacturer has been in the long run making hybrid cars and they are all set to unleash its all-new Ioniq, the long-discussed rival to Toyota Prius. The Hyundai Ioniq is set to be the world’s first production car with fully electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid powertrain options in the range, and it’s seen here undisguised for the first time on a promotional video shoot ahead of its official reveal in January 2016.

The official teaser images revealed months before gave us an idea how the hybrid car would have its interior and exterior and now the spy photos exposed the car in full. The company claims the outside has been primarily designed to offer “class-leading aerodynamic performance” and the slippery shape of the new environmentally-focused family car is very much in evidence.

On the rear, Ioniq adopts a saloon shape and a coupe-like roofline with a small rear window.

Under the striking body shell, the Ioniq will be offered with a range of environmentally-friendly drivetrain options. There will be a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, a plug-in hybrid and an all-electric model as well.

The Hyundai Ioniq is likely to go on sale in the UK in September 2016 in electric and hybrid guises, with the plug-in hybrid following on at a later date. The Ioniq name is a combination of the word ion, an electrically-charged atom, and the word’ unique’.

Woong-Chul Yang, Hyundai’s R&D boss, said: “Our vision for future mobility focuses on choice, with a variety of powertrain options to suit customers’ varied lifestyles, without compromising on design or driving enjoyment. Ioniq is the fruit of our efforts to become the leader in the global green car market.”
